At a special event on 12th September 2006, in San Francisco, Steve Jobs unveiled for Apple a completely revamped iPod lineup, including an updated fifth-generation iPod, new second-generation iPod nano, and an all-new iPod shuffle.

New iPod video (30GB/80GB)
The new iPod video features a 60 percent brighter and more vibrant 2.5- inch color display for watching TV shows and Hollywood movies.

The new iPod integrates with iTunes 7 and the iTunes Store, which now includes over 75 Hollywood movies, 220 television shows and popular video games designed specifically for the fifth generation iPod.

The 30GB model features up to 14 hours of battery life for music playback and up to three and a half hours of video playback, and the 80GB model features up to 20 hours of battery life for music playback and six and a half hours of video playback. The new iPod is available in a 30GB model at the new lower price of US$249 and an 80GB model,
which holds up to 20,000 songs or 100 hours of video, for US$349.

Although the new iPod has improved in brightness and color accuracy over it's prior version, 2.5” screen is still too small for long-term video viewing, and users still must convert videos to one of only two compatible video formats. Unlike photos and videos, games can only be played on the iPod’s small screen, and sometimes with poorly implemented controls.

The all-new iPod nano with a new aluminum body, 24 hours of battery life and more than twice the music capacity for the same price as the previous generation. The new iPod nano features Apple's Click Wheel and an even smaller, thinner and lighter design available in silver, pink, green, blue and black.

The new iPod nano models are now available for US$149 for 2GB iPod nano model (sliver); US$199 for the 4GB models (silver, pink, green and blue) and US$249 for the new 8GB model (black). All iPod nano models include redesigned earbud headphones providing improved comfort, fit and sound quality, and a USB 2.0 cable.

The new Nano colour choices are limited by storage capacities and prices. Transfer times for data have doubled from prior nano model. Users must download iTunes themselves prior to using iPod.

And G51 is part of the Republic of Gamers range of Asus, which means that it contains the Rogue logo on the front cover and more aggressive notebook design. The outer cover has chrome trim around the side edges and bottom, and the future pattern painted on the lid, and both help to advance the overall games topic. Build quality is above average, in the solid material used by the notebook, but there are some areas that you can see some improvement. It looks like your notebook is designed with a different keyboard in mind, though, because the model Chiclet-style breakfast is included just a bit small size bezel around it. This is so loose that with careful prying, you can pop the keyboard tray. This is a small gap of about 2-3mm, but it is sufficient to allow the keyboard slide past the notches that secure it in place

Acer puts out cheap Blu-ray enabled notebook

Last week, Sony announced a line of cheaper notebooks that featured Blu-ray drives. While nobody would ever accuse Sony of being the cheapest anything, the Vaio NW starting point at $880 was one of the cheapest entry level Blu-ray notebooks. Not to be outdone by anyone in price, Acer is now putting out an even cheaper Blu-ray notebook.

The notebook will start at $750 and be part of Acer’s media-focused Gemstone Blue line. Specs give it a 15.6” screen, 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM, 250GB of storage and an nVidia GeForce GT 130M GPU. Certainly not a bad price for the spec sheet, though also nothing particularly mind blowing outside of the featured 8X Blu-ray drive, and a multitouch trackpad. Just in time for the summer back-to-school season the Aspire 5739G will be ready this June.

Acer also announced two budget laptops. One, the 5536, ships with an AMD 2.1 GHz CPU, integrated Radeon GPU, and other fairly boring specs that put it as a decent entry level laptop for those who can’t afford much more. The 5536 is selling right now for the netbook-esque price of $480. There’s also a desktop replacement laptop for $600 with a 17” screen, 2 GHz Pentium dual-core, 4Gb of RAM and 320GB of storage that’s also available now.

Overall nothing particularly mind blowing fro Acer, which isn’t much of a surprise. Acer looks to be attacking Dell in terms of pricing, and these laptops can certainly help. Acer seems to be going in a direction where they offer cheap, barebones machines. Given the current economic state that’s not a bad idea at all.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch

After all the whining, the bickering, and the constant remarks about how Windows-based laptops have this and that and cost so much less, Apple, a company known to make its own rules, is finally letting down its guard. The lovable MacBook Pro 13-inch (now with the "Pro" moniker) has brought back the FireWire port, lowered its price, and for the first time in the company's history, added the elusive SecureDigital (SD) slot. Mind you, we're not ignoring the bigger and now-nonremovable battery, which scored an admirable 4 hours 44 minutes on our battery tests, but the other improvements are signs that Apple is finally paying attention to its suggestion boxes. Indeed, it's a great time to be shopping for a new Apple laptop—especially this one, which earns our Editors' Choice.

This new 12-inch notebook, which weighs less than 4 pounds, is all about keeping your data safe and sound. (A 160GB drive comes standard, as do a speedy 2.4GHz processor and 3GB of RAM.) The laptop comes with a webcam and free videoconferencing software. Plus, you get 24/7 tech support from small-business-trained technicians.

BEST FOR MAC FANS ON A BUDGET: APPLE 13-INCH MACBOOK PRO

The newest, cheapest, and lightest member of the MacBook Pro family combines serious graphics muscle with more than six hours of battery life. The improved LED display is easy on the eyes, too. And the notebook will get even better in September, when Apple releases its Snow Leopard OS, which has built-in support for Microsoft Exchange. New “green laptops” take the idea of an environmentally friendly notebook computer one step further. They are smaller than other notebooks, last longer on a charge, and comply with most environmental regulations. These systems might lack the exceptional performance of desktop-replacement notebooks (massive systems that run at desktop-like speeds and weigh over 10 pounds) but they are designed for getting your work done on the road with an eco-friendly business device.

“Product footprint and weight are key drivers of life cycle environmental impact of PC products,” says David Hallisey, a Gateway representative. “That being the case, smaller-footprint, lighter-weight notebooks are inherently ‘greener’ than heavier, larger-footprint products because they are designed to deliver the desired performance while consuming fewer materials for manufacturing and less energy for shipment and distribution. Packaging requirements are also reduced, saving materials and energy.”

Most PC makers, including Sony, Dell, and Gateway, offer sub-notebooks that are designed for low-power processing and longer battery life than standard notebooks. Intel is another company that has been highly involved in the environmental impact of personal computers. One of the key technologies in their dual-core and quad-core processors, for example, involves better battery management. Laptops that use dual-core processors, such as the Apple MacBook line, can enter a deep sleep state after a period of inactivity that essentially shuts down many components, such as the CD drive and hard drive. Yet, the system resumes quickly without going through a long startup process. (If a notebook took a long time to resume, most users would probably skip the option and just opt for a screensaver instead.)

Microsoft Windows Vista is another key ingredient in green computing. Although Vista may not yet be preinstalled on some of the latest “green” laptops, such as the HP NC2400, it’s worth considering as an upgrade because of the finely tuned power management features.
